Hello Christos,

Remote desktop via satellite is possible and achievable quite easily using solutions found in ‘shore based’ IT environments. I have evaluated a number of these applications including VNC, TeamViewer, Goto My PC using various satellite platforms ranging from Inmarsat to Iridium to VSAT.

One of the biggest issues is cost. Ideally you need access to a packet switched circuit such as MPDS or VSAT. Generally speaking you will achieve a more user friendly experience with quicker response and screen refresh times using circuit switched networks such as Sat-B HSD or ISDN but you can soon run up a big airtime bill!

Feel free contact me via our website www.itatsea.net for more information

You may want to have a look at Uplogix, they offer a lot more than remote access.

The allow the distribution of network management to the edge of the network and their remote boxes can take actions based on triggers. For example if the box sees a router fail it can try a power cycle, switch to a back up and send you an SMS via an Out of Band connection.

Have a look at the link for more info:

Greetings all,

I am keen to know more about Remote Access to the ship even if the cost is high. At least we can track the cost to the problem as at time ship staff unable to advise the problem they are facing. Ideally is to able to carry out trouble shooting and some problem solving before we can get anyone onboard. This way we can better plan for problem solving or replacement. Please reply to my email: sgpwizard@hotmail.com

Hi Christo,

I have tried with both Fleet system of JRC ( JUE-410F & JUE-33 ) which working fantastic. I use the "Ras Connect" function of JRC Fleet system and the VNC program in order to have full remote access to vsl's computer. If you need further informations please do not hesitate to contact me: seatech@netone.gr

Kind regards,

Hi Christos Papalas

Good day to you, Remote access on Fleet 77/33 is possible as it provides up to 128KB speed on Fleet 77 but on Inm B will lag. You may try downloading Free Teamviewer for your vessel com and onshore com. Its free and fast connection with minimum lag and best of all it escapes all Firewall.

Tested it with 3G wireless, works fine.

Regards
Kev Goh
